Well, I scratched my goddamn car again. I’m so sick of this. I mean yes, it was technically avoidable, but the situation is bullshit. Let me explain the situation:

Kinja'd!!!

See that corner of my apartment complex lot? The orange box is a cut-out section of road around a drain (a few inches deep) with cones, the black shape is a trailer, and the green smudge is a pile of cinder blocks. See pictures below. My car is pretty small, but even moving 1mph around this stuff I can still feel my rear wheel hitting the ditch a bit. It’s tight.

Kinja'd!!!

See it better now? There’s even a cone knocked over because other people can’t get around. And, I know the trailer isn’t a responsibility of my apartment, but they can certainly ask the owner to park it in a better location. So yes, I can make it around barely and I have a few times, but this morning I tried extra hard to avoid the ditch and ended up scratching my bumper going a few mph more than the 1 it takes to maneuver safely. I agree, I should have crawled.

Kinja'd!!!

Here’s my car making the turn later to take pics. If you thought, “Try the other side” then this should show it’s too narrow. And, a car is there in that spot often. I don’t remember if it was this morning but I know I definitely couldn’t make it.

Kinja'd!!!

I stayed very clear of the curb in this picture (a foot or so) but even with this turn my rear tire went over into the ditch a tad as I rounded the far cone. There are at least 4 other similar cuts that have been around the lot for a while now. Some are easily avoidable at all times, but many depend on when cars are parked there. See another below.

Kinja'd!!!

So to sum up, I understand that there is technically enough space that I should have been able to avoid the scratch in my car. I’m an idiot. But I’m still really pissed at the apartment complex, and there’s no way other cars (SUVs? Trucks?) are dealing any better than I am. And now, I’m going to be out another (estimated) $700 when I get around to getting this fixed. I just want to drive this thing like a car, not a museum piece, but things like this keep happening and soon I’m just gonna walk to work. UGHHHHHHH.

Kinja'd!!!

Should I do something about this right away? I don’t think it’s just gonna rust away, right? Can I sand it a bit to clean it up? Or, should I just suck it up and go get it fixed for whatever cost?

UPDATE: The BASTARDS filled the holes hours after I did this. The holes have been around for over a month, and this sized for a week, and I missed it BY A FEW HOURS.

Is that part even metal? On most cars, it would be plastic, but maybe Porsches are fancy?

Non-sports-car drivers probably just drive over the curb a bit. But I’m with you on both counts that stuff like that should get filled in with some level of urgency, but also that you could’ve been more careful(What I am not, however, saying is that I wouldn’t have probably done the same thing at some point were I negotiating that daily in a low car.

Ugh, that sucks. At least it’s super low and not that noticeable if you’re standing next to the car...

You can probably sand it and touch it up with a spray can.  Then, tell yourself it’s just a temporary fix and you’ll get to a permanent one eventually.  The just enjoy driving your car.

Ouch. I go over 8 speed bumps a day minimum for work and leaving my complex, I purposefully read all about the ride height of this car, and the others I was looking at. But a curb isn’t the same lol

Honestly, this is what I want to do. My only question is: if I do a shitty touch-up will it affect them fixing it correctly later?

What’s the problem? I t doesn’t look too bad

I wouldn’t whine over it, and I definitely wouldn’t spend $700 to fix it, especially if you’ll just scrape it again. At the minimum, wait until after they’re done, when the square is filled back in, before fixing it.

And of course, you can always do this :p

They’ll just sand the paint off and respray, so any respray you do now shouldn’t hurt an yth ing I would guess....?

I knew all the routes to avoid any speedbumps and curbs in my J etta - and still ended up going through two VR6 lips..

In that case, it shouldn’t rust at all...most front splash shields and bumpers are made of plastic or non-metal materials, even on high end cars.

Why would this possibly need to be filled in with any level of urgency? It’s just a scraped bumper. Is there something I’m missing? I did the same thing to my 335 (down to bare plastic) over two occasions, once because somebody parked too close to my driveway and I couldn’t clear the far curb coming out and the other because a pregnant lady ran out into the street when I was about to turn right into a narrow alley. Should I be worried?

It doesn't "need" to. I was just freaking out and especially after getting a big scratch from this summer fixed.

I mean, don’t quote me on that, as I don’t know much about your car, but I know on most the bumper panels are usually dent resistant plastic...could be carbon on a more expensive supercar, but still won’t rust in that case.

When was the last time time you had your eyes checked at an independent eyecare facility? Granted, I’m in my mid 40's but went to an independent eye doctor last year and the doc took sometime going into the detail one-on-one work that no chain facility would have the time for.

Sorry about your car.  That really sucks.

I'd ignore it.  The underside of my front bumper is lousy with these.  I ended up hitting the underside with black plastic to mask it.

Nope. This is a Cayman. Front bumper here is all plastic.

Uuuuuunfortunately, that looks like it’s too deep to repair and it’s gonna need new plastic. :(

A good body shop can have that plastic bumper looking good as new for a few hundred dollars and a day or so. They may even have a curb rash special since the bumper isn’t smushed in.

Curious question: It looks from the overhead photos that the parking lot circles the building, and/ or connects to other lots. Is there another way in/out?

I was wondering if anyone would ask that as I forgot to add it in. It is a circle, but it's one way and pretty scary going the other direction when necessary. People come around the blind corners way faster than they should. Also, every corner had a similar ditch lol though there was more space at the others.
